The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is proving that road expansion can advance without harming the environment.
On the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway project, the Authority has rolled out a structured tree management and reforestation strategy to ensure ecological protection as the road is modernised.
According to KeNHA, all trees removed during construction are carefully logged, with plans to plant four replacement trees for every one cut down. This 1:4 replanting ratio is part of a broader environmental management system aimed at maintaining the region’s ecological balance even as transport infrastructure is upgraded.
Under its Corporate Social Investment programme, KeNHA said timber from felled trees has been handed to public institutions such as the National Youth Service and Kenya Prisons in Naivasha.
The move ensures that wood from the project is repurposed for institutional and community use rather than discarded.
“This is a practical demonstration that infrastructure development can coexist with environmental conservation,” the Authority said on Wednesday. “Our approach ensures that we not only meet the nation’s transport needs but also enhance green cover and support climate resilience.”
The Authority also highlighted a wider tree replacement programme that will plant more trees than those removed, helping restore the ecological health of the highway corridor.
These replanted trees are expected to serve not only as scenic enhancements but also as carbon sinks, contributing to climate change mitigation at the national level.
KeNHA noted that large infrastructure projects can threaten ecosystems if poorly managed, but the measures in place aim to reconcile development goals with environmental responsibility.
The Rironi-Mau Summit Highway, which links Nairobi to western Kenya, is set to improve transport safety and efficiency while embedding environmental safeguards into its design.
Through careful planning, transparency, and accountability, KeNHA says the project illustrates how major roadworks can align with sustainable development principles, enhancing economic growth while protecting natural resources.
